MOSFET for Li-ion battery's charging/discharging protection circuit

SANYO Semiconductor Co., Ltd. launched 2 models of MOSFET that are best suited for charging/discharging protection circuit of Li-ion batteries. Samples are available from May 2010, and mass production will start from June.
A protection circuit is mounted in Li-ion battery pack for preventing heat or deterioration while the pack is charged or discharged. EFC4612R and EFC4615R are used as the switch MOSFET for this charging/discharging protection circuit. By adopting Sanyo's original technique, EFC4612R and EFC4615R achieved the industry's highest-level ON resistance characteristic and small & thin design. Especially, by adopting Backside Protection Film Tech*3., a backside protection film was able to be attached to the BGA structure, so the chip' durability to impact is secured. In addition, they are environmentally-considered in all aspects, such as Pb-free, halogen-free, energy-saving, reduced used amount of rare metals and raw materials due to their small & thin design. We will continue to provide semiconductor solutions for realizing human's comfortable life and the earth's green environment.

In recent years, mobile equipment market like cell phone, portable music player and digital still camera is expanding remarkably. In these equipments, 1 to 2 cell LiB is used as rechargeable battery. In order for the LiB to be used with enough performance and safety, charging/discharging protection circuit is built in the battery pack to protect from over-charge, over-discharge, over-current and short. MOSFET is turned off when these protection functions operate. MOSFET used in this way is connected in series to the discharge path (see Fig.1), so its resistance (ON resistance) will directly affect the battery's drive time. Additionally, the size of the MOSFET also has a big influence on the size of LiB, so the MOSFET is required to have low ON resistance as well as very small and thin size. Sanyo has been developing and providing this kind of MOSFET ever since the emergence of LiB in the market, and has accumulated considerable experience and know-how in this field.

By adopting the latest T5 trench process chip and BGA structure, EFC4612R and EFC4615R achieved the industry's smallest and thinnest size. Compared with Sanyo's conventional EFC4601R, mount area is reduced by 39%(Δ1.01mm2), performance index achieved 71.5mΩ・mm2. Also, due to adoption of BGA structure, mount height is reduced by 33%(Δ0.18mm) (see Fig.2). - Durability to impact is secured due to adoption of Backside Protection Film tech.
For achieving the industry's thinnest size, we made the wafer as thin as 200µm. As a result, intensity of the chip is decreased and chip crack may occur. To address this problem, we established Backside Protection Film Tech. (generation of a stable protection film to the backside of the chip; optimization of the material of the film and the process of the film generation) and secured equivalent durability to impact as our earlier products (see Fig.3).
This will help reduce chip crack while being mounted, thus can help users improve yield and quality. - RoHS compliance
